  • 475ml water
  • 310g peeled and cubed red potatoes
  • 50g melted butter
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons plain flour
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 700ml milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon caster sugar
  • 120g grated Cheddar cheese
  • 115g diced ham

  1. Using a medium sized stock pot bring water to the boil, add potatoes and cook until tender. Drain reserving 250ml liquid.
  2. Stir in butter, onion and flour. Season with salt and pepper. Gradually stir in potatoes, reserved liquid, milk, sugar, cheese and ham. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring frequently.

Simple to make. Nice, creamy consistency. But, as a previous reviewer mentioned, the onions are still crunchy after 30 minutes simmer time (I even cooked them in the flour and butter for a couple minutes before adding the rest of the ingredients). I'd highly recommend cooking the onions in the butter first, until soft, then mixing in the flour, etc.-28 Dec 2005


Great base recipe, but I did cook this a bit differently. I sauteed my onions, along with garlic, celery and carrot. Instead of adding flour to thicken, I opted for more potatoes which worked wonderfully. Didn't see the need for the sugar and because I had it in the house, I used crisply cooked bacon instead of the ham. Once the soup was done, I turned off the heat and then added the cheese. It melted in nicely and there was no separation. Also threw in a light sprinkling of cayenne pepper. Hubby and I were both thrilled with your recipe Debbie and thank you so much!-23 Sep 2007


This was really good. I did add more cheese. I was looking for a recipe that was like bob evans cheddar soup. This was really close. I added chopped bacon and green onion to the top and it was awsome!!-28 May 2005

Ham and Potato Soup

Anyone who follows my blog knows my love for the leftover ham bones from any holiday feast. This recipe for ham and potato soup uses a ham bone leftover from a holiday. There are so many things you can do with leftover ham besides sandwiches. You can make black bean soup or mac and cheese with ham. Being able to reuse ingredients you might otherwise throw out is a great way to save you some money.

This recipe is a bowl of delicious potato soup with ham and cheese. I used cream in the recipe. You could use whole milk or even sour cream if you had it on hand. There is a rumor you can go to your local Honeybaked Ham store and just buy the bones. I am not sure of the price but I am curious to know if it is worth it and how much meat is on them. If anyone has tried this please leave your comments below, I would love to know.

I use one of my favorite kitchen gadgets Cuisinart Smart Stick 2 Speed Hand Blender, Brushed Stainless Steel to blend the soup. A potato masher like this OXO Good Grips Stainless Steel Potato Masher with Cushioned Handle would work as well. Next time you have leftover ham I hope you try this and love it as much as we do!

Creamy Cheddar Ham and Potato Soup

Looking for something to do with all of your leftover holiday ham? Try this creamy cheddar ham and potato soup. Seasoned with a ham bone, this hearty soup is chock full of seasoned veggies and leftover ham. The recipe makes a lot (my slow cooker is one of the smaller ones, but it was full to the brim), but this soup will not last long around your house.

This recipe for cheddar ham and potato soup serves at least 7 people.

Homemade soup is great any time of the year but especially in the winter or on rainy days. That&rsquos why using leftover holiday ham is perfect for this recipe. I used leftover Honey Baked Ham in this picture. If you choose this make sure to cook off any of the sugary coating or skin. Otherwise, your soup will taste sweet instead of salty.

Spicy Ham, Cheddar & Potato Soup

    8 oz Zeigler Black Pepper ham, chopped
    2 Cups baked potatoes, chopped
    1 Cup carrots, chopped
    1/2 Cup onion, sliced thin
    4 Cups water
    Bring these ingredients to a boil & reduce the heat. Keep the pot rolling, but not boiling.

Add the spices: 2 tsp garlic ( more to taste)
3 tsp parsley
1 whole bay leaf. (The one who gets it in their cup or bowl has good luck for the next day.)
1 tsp cayenne pepper (more to taste)

Adjust cayenne pepper to taste. I like mine spicy!

  • ¾ cup diced cooked ham
  • ⅓ cup finely chopped onion
  • ⅓ cup diced celery
  • 3 cloves garlic, diced

  • 2 tablespoons chicken bouillon granules
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk

Combine potatoes, cauliflower, corn, cooked ham, onion, celery, and garlic in a large soup pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium, and cook until potatoes are tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Stir chicken bouillon, salt, and white pepper into mixture.

Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat whisk in flour to make a paste. Cook for 1 minute and gradually whisk milk into flour mixture until smooth. Continue cooking until thick, 4 to 5 minutes, whisking often.

Stir milk mixture into soup and cook until heated through, 5 to 10 minutes.

Combine the potatoes, celery, onion, ham and water in a stockpot. Bring to a boil, then cook over medium heat until potatoes are tender, about 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in the chicken bouillon, salt and pepper.

In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat. Whisk in flour with a fork, and cook, stirring constantly until thick, about 1 minute. Slowly stir in milk as not to allow lumps to form until all of the milk has been added. Continue stirring over medium-low heat until thick, 4 to 5 minutes.

Stir the milk mixture into the stockpot, and cook soup until heated through. Serve immediately.

Let discipline be your friend in 2019

I’m very excited for 2019. I have some new things on the horizon that I will be sharing with you at a later date, but for now, I’m thinking of the word discipline.

I don’t know what it is about the end of the year, but all discipline seems to go out the window (healthy eating, exercise, clutter).

So this year, 2019, I am going to let discipline be my friend.

I’m happy to report that my husband and I turned our bedroom upside down and got rid of bookshelves, instead adding more shelving to our closets, and took three or four loads to Good Will.

Even though we’ve only lived in this house 2.5 years, it’s small, and it’s amazing how much clutter you can collect.

Basic Ham and Potato Soup

We love making big hams and using leftovers in easy dishes like this Farmhouse Ham & Potato Soup.

Slow Cooker Leftover Ham & Shredded Potato Soup

If your family is anything like mine, by day 3 of leftovers they are like NOPE NOPE NOPE! I try to be versatile and let’s say we’re having chicken, I’ll use the leftovers in quesadillas or a casserole but at the end of the day, even I get tired of the leftovers.

Not ham though…I feel like that’s the one leftover that no matter how I recreate it into another dish the family is actually happy! SCORE!

Easter Sunday was just 4 days ago and last night I scored big time with this delicious Slow Cooker Leftover Ham & Shredded Potato Soup. I just had to hurry up and get it on our site in case you have a little leftover ham stashed in the fridge and dreading feeding it to the family.

Basically, this is my go-to crockpot easy creamy potato soup recipe with a couple of minor modifications. All you need to do is chop up your leftover ham, and just dump it into this soup mixture.
