Don’t miss the chance to close the summer with a bang!

Labor Day celebrations are important, so plan ahead!

Traditionally, Labor Day marks the end of the summer, a last hoorah before vacations become scarcer and the warm weather goes into hibernation. Of course, Labor Day represents far more than that. It is the recognition of how hard workers fought for better working conditions at the height of the industrial revolution. In honor of this pursuit of justice, in 1894 Labor Day was declared a national federal holiday that would consistently take place on the first Monday in September.

While the reason for the date fluctuation isn’t specified, it is important to know the actual date of this holiday so you can celebrate it properly. Begin planning for your barbecue early this year and get ready to celebrate Labor Day this year on:

Monday, September 4th, 2017

Don’t miss any more Labor Day celebrations. Mark these days down on your calendar so you can plan a last-day-of-summer bash:

Summer declines and roses have grown rare,
But cottage crofts are gay with hollyhocks,
And in old garden walks you breathe an air
Fragrant of pinks and August-smelling stocks

Labor Day 2017

Labor Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country. In the United States, Labor Day is a federal holiday observed on the first Monday of September.

In the United States, Labor Day is customarily viewed as the end of the summer vacation season, although school starting times now may vary.

Labor Day has its origins in the labor union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. In the United States the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday on February 21, 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day.

For many countries, Labor Day is linked with International Workers' Day, which occurs on May 1. For other countries, Labor Day is celebrated on a different date, often one with a particular significance significance for the labor movement in that country.

What NOT to buy on Labor Day weekend

When hitting the stores this holiday weekend, sales on products like TVs may not be the bargains retailers want you to think they are.

When Americans aren’t busy firing up the grill for a backyard barbecue or hitting the road this Labor Day weekend, there’s a good chance they’ll be looking to shop the holiday sales. But if consumers aren’t careful, they could actually be missing out on savings.

While not as big as Black Friday, Independence Day or Memorial Day, retailers still use Labor Day weekend as an opportunity to move merchandise off the shelves in the lead-up to the holiday shopping season. The weekend is also a last-ditch opportunity for many shoppers looking to score back-to-school bargains.

As a result, there are some good deals to be had, but most sales don’t offer the best possible savings. “Labor Day is one of the weaker sales weekends of the year,” said Kristin Cook, managing editor for BensBargains.com. “Most retailers will save their really good stuff for Black Friday, which has turned into basically Black November.”

Here’s what to skip this year or, at least, approach with caution.

Avoid: Fall apparel and footwear

Though the prospect of prepping for layering season may be tempting, Labor Day is perhaps one of the worst times to buy fall clothing. For shoppers in desperate need of warmer clothing as autumn weather rolls in, the first two or three weeks of September are a better time to shop because retailers start heavily marking down “back to school” apparel, Cook said. Better yet, they can wait for clearance sales during Black Friday.

Labor Day is however a good time to buy summer clothing, including swimwear and shorts. Expect retailers also to stock the shelves with this year’s popular Halloween costumes to catch the eyes of trick-or-treaters, but avoid whipping out the wallet to buy one. The best time to buy costumes is right after Halloween.

Avoid: Jewelry

Jewelers tend to restock in October, said Sara Skirboll, shopping and trends expert at deals website RetailMeNot. Consequently, these stores will be disinclined to offer any significant deals in September with such low inventory.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday will be somewhat better, but the best time to shop for that diamond ring or necklace will be in the weeks following Valentine’s Day.

Avoid: Electronics

Deals on items like laptops, televisions and smartphones actually aren’t bad in early September. But those who can wait should. “Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts prove to be much deeper so purchasing any electronics Labor Day weekend will make a larger dent in your wallet than needed,” Skirboll said.

Along similar lines, don’t expect deals on items from Amazon AMZN, +1.31% . “Amazon puts most of their focus on Prime Day for the summer, so they don’t seem to do be doing any big Labor Day pushes,” Cook said.

Avoid: Toys and video games

Some stores will offer deals on video games and toys during Labor Day, but consumers are almost certainly better off waiting for Black Friday or even later, said Phil Dengler, co-founder of BestBlackFriday.com.

This is especially true for video game consoles. Not only will the discounts be better at the height of holiday shopping season for these items, but many retailers will offer them as bundles with games and gift cards, Dengler said.

Avoid: Purchases through credit card shopping portals

As Black Friday creeps closer, credit-card companies will begin to ramp up the deals they offer through their deal portals, said Ashley Dull, credit strategist and editor in chief of CardRates.com. As a result, discounts offered now by credit cards won’t be as competitive.

Consumers should also approach Labor Day deals with caution if their credit card features rotating bonus categories. “Cards with rotating bonus categories will typically switch to popular holiday retailers during the fourth quarter, unlocking extra rewards,” Dull said.

What to approach with caution

Though Labor Day discounts will pale in comparison to the holiday shopping season, sales on certain items can be competitive.

  • Appliances: Sales on major appliances are typically better during other times of the year. For instance, in May retailers often put refrigerators on sale, because new models become available in June. But some retailers, including Macy’s M, -1.59% and Best Buy BBY, -0.20% , are offering up to 40% off some goods this weekend, which is in line with Black Friday pricing.
  • Gas grills: Labor Day is most famous for its sales on grills — and good deals are often available this weekend as prime grilling season comes to a close. Sales can range between 25% and 75% off, Dengler said. Consumers could save even more by waiting until October or November, although selection will be more limited then.
  • Summer items: With autumn only weeks away, stores are going to be deeply discounting inventory that’s geared toward summer, such as lawn mowers, air conditioners, patio furniture and swimming pools. These discounts will be available across many retailers including The Gap GAP, -2.58% , Target TGT, +0.14% , Walmart WMT, +0.01% and The Home Depot HD, -0.29% .

Blueberry Chipotle Barbecue Sauce

Smoky-sweet, with a tinge of heat, and oh so blissfully blueberry: this Blueberry Chipotle Barbecue Sauce is easy, quick and a delectable finish to summer grilling fare!

Monday is Labor Day. Where did the summer of 2017 go? For me and my family it was spent maximizing moments of time being together, living the moments with day trips, a vacation, swimming and many long dinners after the slow sunsets on Saturday nights. The holiday signals the close of summer is near and the fact that kids have returned to school backs it up. Labor Day, the first Monday of September, marks an annual national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the prosperity, strength, and well-being of our country.

Two months ago on the fourth was Independence Day an occasion where I was reminded of a recipe I haven’t used for a while. Baby back pork ribs were on the menu: low-n-slow in the smoker for several hours, then lacquered in a sauce on the grill to finish. Mrs. W made the suggestion to use the Blueberry Chipotle Barbecue Sauce I devised for this award-winning burger . I hadn’t used the sauce on pork, but when mopped on racks of ribs the tender meat glistens with smoky-sweet-hot sensations on a base of fruity blueberry. It’s a real palate pleaser. Are you salivating yet?

If you’re looking for a new BBQ condiment for your holiday gathering, give this one a try. Beef, pork, poultry and salmon are tried, true and tasty! Be sure to see the recipe notes below.

This holiday, my labor will be directed towards the grill, in an outdoor setting complete with a beverage cooler, and in the company of family.

Smoky-sweet, with a tinge of heat, and oh so blissfully blueberry: this Blueberry Chipotle Barbecue Sauce is easy, quick and a delectable finish to summer grilling fare!

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • ¼ cup chopped canned chipotle chilies (about 4-5 chilies)
  • 2 tablespoons adobo sauce (from the chipotle chile can)
  • 2/3 cup good blueberry jam or preserves
  • In a food processor or blender, combine the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, garlic, chipotle chilies, adobo sauce and blueberry jam purée all the ingredients until very smooth. Makes about 2 cups barbecue sauce, which will keep refrigerated in an airtight container for up to one week.

For those who may not know: Chipotle chilies are smoked, ripe jalapeno peppers and they are typically canned in adobo sauce. In the U.S., the adobo sauce leans toward Mexican influence which is a thick, red sauce made with crushed chilies, spices, garlic, salt and vinegar. The chipotle chilies can be found in the Mexican food aisle of most grocers.

Tip: to best access the measure of adobo sauce needed in the recipe, gently remove the chilies to a separate container. Most of the sauce will have settled to the bottom of the can or jar (depending upon packing vessel). From there you’ll be able to get the measure with greater ease. Good news! Unused chilies in adobo freeze well for use later.

I use blueberry preserves which I make myself every year with the freshest-best berries. Store-bought commercial varieties like Bonne Maman Wild Blueberry Preserves or Stonewall Kitchen Maine Blueberry Preserves are of high caliber and provide the pronounced blueberry flavor necessary to yield the intended berry punch for the barbecue sauce.
