From Scratch Honey Ham Recipe Ingredients

  • HAM: Buy a spiral cut ham with the bone-in at the grocery store or a local butcher shop. Plan for ½ lb ham per person. Ham comes completely cooked, so don’t worry about finding a label that says whether it’s cooked or not.
  • HONEY: I highly suggest using clover honey. This honey is typically light and golden in color.
  • SUGARS: Light brown sugar, granulated sugar, and light corn syrup are all used for the honey ham glaze. Each provides a unique sweetness and texture to the glaze.
  • CINNAMON: Cinnamon is a key ingredient in honey ham. The best honey hams always use this ingredient in combination with a honey topping.
  • SEASONING: A little mustard, onion, and garlic powder add to the flavor of the ham.

What Food to Serve with Ham

Baking a ham for a family dinner or holidays like Easter, Christmas, Mother’s Day, or Thanksgiving is my preferred method while serving it with a honey glaze flavor.

VEGETABLE SIDE DISHES: Serve sliced ham with this classic oven-roasted broccoli recipe with ranch and lemon flavor. It’s always a hit with the family. Another vegetable I like to make is this elevated Crack Brussels Sprouts recipe with crispy tips. Step basic green beans up a notch and make these Green Bean Bundles with Bacon. Make a batch of Creamed Corn to serve as a vegetable dish. Potato dishes are the most popular dish to serve with ham. Opt to make Creamy Mashed Potatoes, Cheesy Mashed Potato Casserole, or a Loaded Potato Salad recipe during the summer months.

FRUIT SIDE DISHES: During the spring and summer months, ham pairs perfectly with this Brown Sugar and Orange Juice Glazed Fruit Salad. For a quick and easy creamy fruit salad, make this Cherry Fluff Salad. It features cherry pie filling tossed with whipped cream and marshmallows. Another timeless classic is this Creamy Ambrosia Salad.

FALL/WINTER HOLIDAY SIDE DISHES: Ham typically served for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day pairs great with Cranberry Relish, Cranberry Sauce, and Cranberry Fluff Salad. The fluff salad is made with fresh cranberries, pineapple, marshmallows, and whipped cream. Sweet Cornbread is another one of my favorites as well as this Ruth’s Chris Sweet Potato Casserole.

Honey Baked Ham Recipe Tips & Questions

HAM CALCULATOR: How much ham do I need to feed xx guests for our holiday dinner? When serving a bone-in ham, plan for guests to eat ½ lb ham per person. That’s: number of guests X 0.5 = number of pounds of ham.

Where can I find a spiral cut ham and can I use one that is not cut? Spiral cut hams are typically sold by the meats that you may find on the outer sides of the grocery store. Read the label to see if it’s spiral cut.

Do you have a slow cooker ham recipe? Yes, for a slow cooker version, use this Crock Pot Glazed Ham Recipe.

What should I do with the seasoning packet? Taste it. If you like it, you can always incorporate it and serve with the ham in a small bowl. Otherwise, pitch the packet.

I can’t find an uncooked ham. They all say fully cooked. Can I still make this recipe? Yes. Today, ham that’s served in the grocery store and at most butcher shops IS fully cooked. You’ll be hard-pressed to find an uncooked ham. Because hams are fully cooked, the recipes online and in cookbooks are for cooked hams. Since the ham is fully cooked and may be eaten cold right out of the package, most recipes like mine work to incorporate flavor and directions to heat the ham since it’s typically served warm for holidays.

Leftover Ham Recipes

LEFTOVER HAM RECIPES: Use any leftover ham in my real Red Beans and Rice recipe. This classic southern recipe features ham as an ingredient. Combine ham and cheese with puff pastry in these Baked Ham Sandwiches. For breakfast, make my Hashbrown and Egg Casserole.

What you Need to Cook Honey Brown Sugar Ham

Honey Glazed Ham is a one of my favorite meals during the holidays! I love the smell of it baking in the oven, the juicy first cut and the warmth it brings in our home and our hearts! It is a comforting meal that is sure to please everyone gathered around your table.

  • Ham: about 5 pounds big and precooked.
  • Honey: for a sweet, sticky glaze.
  • Butter: combines and melts in with the sweeter ingredients.
  • Dark corn syrup: a great thickener and sweet taste.
  • Brown sugar: tastes a bit like toffee and turns into a caramel taste when melted with butter.
  • Whole cloves: this is a strong and sweet with a little bitterness to it.

Baked ham glaze

This glaze is deliciously sweet and tangy, which compliments the ham perfectly. It caramelizes as it bakes in the oven, which adds a super delicious flavor.

  • Honey: The honey adds to the sweetness of the glaze. You can substitute honey for maple syrup if you prefer maple flavor.
  • Brown sugar: Light or dark brown sugar will both work. For a more subtle flavor, use light brown sugar. For a richer flavor, use dark brown sugar.
  • Dijon mustard: The mustard helps balance out the sweetness with it’s tangy flavor. I like using dijon instead of yellow because it has a little less vinegar and adds some spice.

Honey-Bourbon Glazed Ham

Southerners know food, and we're especially particular about our Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. We gather every family member around a perfectly coiffed tablescape, bring out all of our favorite Southern classics (we're looking at you, mashed potatoes!), and take time to enjoy each others' company. The food at these celebrations plays a huge role. Whether you're a turkey, ham, or pot roast family – we encourage you to try this oh-so-juicy Honey-Bourbon Glazed Ham. Coated with a sweet mixture of honey, brown sugar, molasses, bourbon, and Creole mustard, this star entree is studded with cloves – so its presentation is equally as beautiful as its taste. Smoky, sweet, and fragrant, this crowd-pleasing ham recipe pairs well with just about any side dish that Mama wants to have on her holiday dinner table. Plus, if you have any leftovers (unlikely, we remind you), you can carve up the best ham-and-cheese sandwich you've ever had for lunch the next day.

This honey-baked ham recipe starts with a fully cooked, bone-in ham. Remove the skin from the ham, and trim back the fat until it's about 1/4-inch thick. Make a cross-hatch pattern on the ham, with 1-inch diamond cuts. Cover the ham completely, so that your syrup will soak in evenly! Add whole cloves into the center of your diamond cuts. Place the ham on a foil-lined pan, and then drizzle your honey-sugar-mustard mixture until the ham is completely covered. Bake the ham at 350˚ for 2 hours and 30 minutes, basting the ham with juices from the pan every half-hour or so. If your ham starts to brown, shield it with a little tin foil. Let it sit outside the oven for about 30 minutes, and then carve away!

This recipe is great for dinner parties and also great for if you want to have a little bit of a fancier dinner. With this holiday classic, you can still enjoy it at any time of the year. Pair it with Oven Baked Potatoes, Corn Casserole, or Cheesy Crack Chicken Casserole and you will have a meal that will be talked about for the rest of the week.

I also really enjoy eating this with Instant Pot Corn on the Cob. I find by combining all of these dishes it really makes me feel accomplished and makes my belly happy.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are great questions to ask and will help you when making this honey glazed ham. It is so simple to make and comes together beautifully. Soon you will be cooking your very own honey glazed ham and enjoy your holiday dinner with your family. A delicious sweet honey glaze that gives your ham the perfect flavor!

  • Do I slice the ham before cooking? No, this is not recommended. You can score the outside of the ham but slicing the ham will dry it out.
  • How much ham per person? Usually it is about 1/2 pound of ham per person. If you are wanting left overs at the end estimate 1 pound per person when buying your ham.
  • How big of a ham should I buy? This is a great question for baking the ham. You may have several people coming but the important part is how big your pan is that will be baking it in. A 6 to 8 quart pot or 12 x 16 pan fits about a 6 to 7 pound ham.
  • Will a ham cook overnight? Yes! This is a great idea when needing more time for other things during the day. Simply preheat the oven to a 275 degrees. Follow the instructions for preparing and baking the honey glazed ham. Bake uncovered for 6 to 7 hours. While baking continue to spread the glaze over the ham.
  • Do you cover your ham? Yes, this is a great way to avoid your ham from over baking and becoming dry. At the end of baking the ham remove the aluminum foil and broil it for a crisp outer layer.
  • Should I glaze the ham before cooking? Yes! Brush the glaze mixture over top and into the ham as much and best that you can. Continue to glaze the ham throughout the baking process every 15 to 20 minutes for best results. When the ham is finished cooking brush the remainder of the glaze mixture and broil the top and outside layer of the ham. This will leave a caramelized look and texture on your ham.
