Pennsylvania Dutch Cake and Custard Pie

Ingredients

For the crust:

  • 1 box Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box

For the filling:

  • 1/3 Cup granulated sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Pillsbury BEST all-purpose flour
  • 1 Teaspoon apple pie spice*
  • 1 Cup applesauce
  • 2/3 Cups sour cream
  • 1/3 Cup molasses
  • 1 egg, beaten

For the cake:

  • 1/2 Cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 Cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 Cup sour milk**
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/4 Cup Pillsbury BEST all-purpose flour
  • 1 Teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 Teaspoon baking soda

For the glaze:

  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup(s) powdered sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons brewed coffee

4 large eggs
2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 stick unsalted butter - melted
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla
1 pinch salt
1 (9 inch) pie crust

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Beat eggs, vinegar, sugar, melted butter, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt until well
combined and slightly thickened.
Pour batter into pie crust and bake for 25 minutes.
Center should be set.
Cool before serving.

Homemade Pie Crust: If you don't have a ready made pie crust you
can use any recipe you have on hand and make your mine.

Amish Sugar Cream Pie

3⁄4 cup sugar
1⁄4 cup cornstarch
1⁄4 teaspoon salt
2 1⁄2 cups half-and-half or 2 1⁄2 cups light cream
or (double cream UK)
1⁄2 cup butter
1⁄4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 9-inch baked pie crust
ground cinnamon


In a medium saucepan, stir together the sugar, cornstarch and salt.
Whisk in the half-and-half or light cream and cook and stir over medium heat until the mixture is thickened and bubbly.
Remove from heat.
Stir in butter, brown sugar and vanilla until butter melts.
Pour into baked pie shell and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.
Bake the pie in a 325° oven for 30 minutes- the center of the pie will not be set.
Cool the pie on a wire rack for 1 hour.
Chill for 3 to 6 hours before serving- pie will set up upon chilling.
Cover for longer storage.

Amish Sugar Cream Pie

3⁄4 cup sugar
1⁄4 cup cornstarch
1⁄4 teaspoon salt
2 1⁄2 cups half-and-half or 2 1⁄2 cups light cream
or (double cream UK)
1⁄2 cup butter
1⁄4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 9-inch baked pie crust
ground cinnamon


In a medium saucepan, stir together the sugar, cornstarch and salt.
Whisk in the half-and-half or light cream and cook and stir over medium heat until the mixture is thickened and bubbly.
Remove from heat.
Stir in butter, brown sugar and vanilla until butter melts.
Pour into baked pie shell and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.
Bake the pie in a 325° oven for 30 minutes- the center of the pie will not be set.
Cool the pie on a wire rack for 1 hour.
Chill for 3 to 6 hours before serving- pie will set up upon chilling.
Cover for longer storage.

Amish Sugar Cream Pie

3⁄4 cup sugar
1⁄4 cup cornstarch
1⁄4 teaspoon salt
2 1⁄2 cups half-and-half or 2 1⁄2 cups light cream
or (double cream UK)
1⁄2 cup butter
1⁄4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 9-inch baked pie crust
ground cinnamon


In a medium saucepan, stir together the sugar, cornstarch and salt.
Whisk in the half-and-half or light cream and cook and stir over medium heat until the mixture is thickened and bubbly.
Remove from heat.
Stir in butter, brown sugar and vanilla until butter melts.
Pour into baked pie shell and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.
Bake the pie in a 325° oven for 30 minutes- the center of the pie will not be set.
Cool the pie on a wire rack for 1 hour.
Chill for 3 to 6 hours before serving- pie will set up upon chilling.
Cover for longer storage.

Among the ranks of other Southern desperation pies, like our Classic Chess Pie and Old-Fashioned Shoofly Pie, is the delightfully tangy Vinegar Pie. Our recipe is elevated a bit with additions like vanilla and honey (things not readily available during the Great Depression), but we think these additions add depth to an already delicious pie during a time when those ingredients are more accessible.The sharpness of the vinegar is offset by the sugar and salt in the filling, lending a tartness and tang similar to cheesecake while maintaining the texture of a gooey custard pie.

How To make Pennsylvania Dutch Cake And Custard Pie Country Living

Craving something sweet but don't want to leave your house. All you need to make this Vinegar Pie are ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry so what are you waiting for! It's delicious and so easy to make!

4 large eggs
2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 stick unsalted butter - melted
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla
1 pinch salt
1 (9 inch) pie crust

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Beat eggs, vinegar, sugar, melted butter, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt until well
combined and slightly thickened.
Pour batter into pie crust and bake for 25 minutes.
Center should be set.
Cool before serving.

Homemade Pie Crust: If you don't have a ready made pie crust you
can use any recipe you have on hand and make your mine.
