This quick and spicy chili made with ground turkey lies somewhere between our hearty, rib-sticking Chipotle Bean and Beef Chili and our lighter Basic Vegetarian Chili. First, sauté ground turkey with red bell pepper, onion, and garlic. Add chili powder, cayenne, ground cumin, and a bit of cinnamon to provide depth and heat, then stir in canned diced tomatoes and canned white beans and leave to simmer until the flavors mingle. In about an hour, you’ll be ready to ladle this satisfying weeknight meal into bowls and top with our crumbled Baked Tortilla Chips and a dollop of sour cream.

This dish pairs wonderfully with our basic Jalapeño Poppers. For more easy, healthy chili recipes, see our Chicken Chili recipe.

Recipe Tips

Where&rsquos The Beef &ndash If you prefer beef over turkey, you can easily substitute it in this recipe. If you do, I would recommend using beef that&rsquos no leaner than 80/20. The more fat in the beef, the better the flavor.

Make It Spicy &ndash If you prefer a spicy chili, go ahead and had some diced jalapenos or cayenne pepper to taste.

Thicker &ndash If you want to thicken up the turkey chili a little, put the Instant Pot back on sauté mode after it&rsquos done cooking and let it simmer for another 5 minutes or so.

Bean Mixture &ndash If you don&rsquot like any of the beans used in this chili recipe, you can easily substitute them for others you prefer.

5-Ingredient Chili

1 pound ground beef or turkey
1 large white onion, diced
1/4 cup water
2 (14-ounce) cans diced tomatoes
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 (15-ounce) cans beans, rinsed and drained

In a Dutch oven or large pot, cook the ground beef and onion over medium heat until the beef is browned, about 7 to 8 minutes. Stir every now and then to help crumble up the meat.

Drain the meat mixture and return to pan. Add the chili powder and stir well.

Add the beans, water, and diced tomatoes to the pot and bring to a slow boil. Cover and reduce the heat to low simmer for 20 minutes. Then uncover and simmer for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Ladle chili into bowls and serve hot. Top with sour cream, cheddar cheese, cilantro or chopped green onion — or anything else that makes you happy. Chili will keep refrigerated for a good 5 to 6 days. After that, freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.

A Delicious Simple Chili Recipe

This is the easiest most simplified Chili recipe I have. This was actually a request, and I thought it would be perfect for this weather. Remember you can always substitute the ground beef with ground turkey!

1. The first thing I did was prepare my beans. You are more than welcome to use canned beans, however, they tend to cost a little more.

2. In a skillet, you are going to brown your ground meat on medium high. At this time you may season it a bit with a tsp of ground garlic powder. Make sure you drain all fat from your meat. When you meat is browned, but not over cooked – put your meat aside .

3. We are now going to saute our veggies on medium heat (the celery, peppers, onions, and etc). I usually use a little olive oil to sautee these, but it is okay to use whatever vegetable oil you have.

4. Once your vegetables are done, you may add all of your ingredients in a large pot. Your heat should be on medium-low. Once everything is in the pot, and properly stirred, cover your chili and let it cook for one hour. REMEMBER to stir periodically, otherwise it will burn at the bottom!
